The Honest Stand, is a company committed to creating delicious plant-based comfort food.  Their  dairy-free, organic, and gluten-free dips come in 5 flavors: Garlic Parm Style Dip, Cheddar Style Dip, Smoked Cheddar Style Dip, Mild Nacho Dip, and Spicy Nacho Dip.

Jeremy Day, CEO and co-founder of The Honest Stand, shares the story of his company.

The Honest Stand’s Start-up Story

“The idea behind the products started when my co-founder, Alexandra Carone, and I met at USD (University of San Diego),” Jeremy explained. “She made this vegetable and nut-based, vegan mac sauce, and for years we made that for ourselves.” 

While in graduate school at the University of Denver, Jeremy and Alexandra wanted to test their products in the Colorado market. They started with farmers’ markets and eventually got the attention of Whole Foods, who now, along with several other retailers,  carry their products.

Whether you are vegan, paleo, or flexitarian, with The Honest Stand’s dips you can indulge guilt-free into mac and cheese, nacho dishes, and a variety of saucy recipes.

“Community is one of the core principles I live by, and we had an opportunity to bring people with different dietary restrictions together under one product,” said Jeremy.  “That is what we have continued to build our company off of.” 

The Honest Stand is recognized regionally and nationally. In 2017, Jeremy’s company won first place at the Naturally Boulder Pitch Slam competition.   Then, in 2018 they received the NEXTY Award for Best New Dairy/Meat Alternative.

“It was a huge honor in so many ways, to be a part of that legacy of companies setting the example of what natural products should be going forward, ” Jeremy said.

The Honest Stand’s Mission

When he, and his co-founder Alexandra, started to make this cheese sauce they realized that products in stores were made from chemicals in a lab rather than ingredients from the earth. 

“Ingredients that have scientific names that you have to google to understand doesn’t feel right to me,”  Jeremy expressed.  “If an ingredient is not something that is directly pulled from the earth, why are we putting that in our body on a regular basis?”  

For example, the ingredients in their Garlic Parm Style Dip are water, potatoes, cashews, onions, carrots, vinegar, sea salt, and garlic powder–that’s it.  

From an environmental perspective, The Honest Stand provides eco-friendly alternatives to dairy products.   According to the World Wide Fund organization, dairy production has a large impact on climate change because of the emissions of greenhouse gas that are a part of this industry.   A report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, found that the production of Methane, from dairy production, contributes to 52% of greenhouse gas emissions, from both developing and developed countries. 

Jeremy recognizes that the real ingredients in The Honest Stand’s products are good for you and the planet. For these reasons, making their dips accessible to everyone is one of their goals. 

“Having nostalgic comfort foods, at an affordable price, ideally for every economic class, is a purpose that drives me every day,” Jeremy said.

What It’s like as a Food Entrepreneur

Jeremy believes that without purpose, one will inevitably burnout.  He shared that as an entrepreneur, he has faced many challenges, and often questioned whether he should quit. 

“The hardship [of being an entrepreneur] is bittersweet,” Jeremy conceded.  “There are junctures where you’re not sure if your company will come out of whatever you’re going through at the moment, or if you will have the money to make it work. Or maybe you made the wrong decision on a strategic initiative, and those situations can be stressful.”

When asked what it takes to be an entrepreneur, he said that it takes: discipline, self-awareness, perseverance, and passion–there has to be a reason for why you do something. 

“You need to be able to figure out how to evolve and become that next version, that stronger version of yourself. That next level of strategic thinker or budgeter,” Jeremy explained. “The challenge of being an entrepreneur is one of the most rewarding experiences. I am always so grateful for those moments because they push me to be a better version of myself.”

Looking back on all things that brought Jeremy to this place in his life, he feels that moments in his childhood, and in college, have been a great influence on who he is.

“Driving from the point of what my childhood was, I didn’t grow up with a lot of money.  I grew up in a lower middle-class family. That is an aspect that drives me, but it would be a misrepresentation to say there is only one thing that drives me,” Jeremy clarified.  “While I was at USD, we had this focus on doing business for good.  The mentality that an organization should have a purpose that leaves the world a better place is a huge influence on me.

Jeremy is living these ideals through The Honest Stand, a company dedicated to making products that innovate the food industry and bring people together.  

“I want to leave the world in a better place than I found it, and everything that I do focuses around that,” Jeremy stated.
