So, whether you are making a veggie burger for yourself or to be inclusive of all of your guests, our tips and tricks will come in handy to make a vegetable patty that will have even the pickiest of eaters saying “yum.” They make a perfect, delicious meal that won’t leave you hungry a mere 30 minutes later. The Easiest Black Bean Veggie Burger Recipe
What better recipe to start off with than the classic: a black bean veggie burger. The greatest thing about these burgers? Their flexibility in flavor. You can dress up a black bean patty in any way you like; it will suit almost any craving. If you are wanting a “regular” burger, then dress up the patty with the classic lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and ketchup. It will taste just as amazing, we promise! You can add some cheese if you would like to add another level of richness.
However, our favorite way to enjoy a black bean veggie burger is by adding some sweet corn into the patty. The little kernels introduce another level of flavor and add some great texture. Then, to complete the meal, you absolutely must top the burger with some sliced avocado, tomatoes, cilantro, and the squeeze of a lime. It is absolutely mouthwatering and offers an exciting alternative to the normal sandwich you may be used to.
Now, there are some important components that are necessary for making a successful black bean veggie burger recipe. One of them is binder. The binding ingredient helps hold the patty together. If you omit this ingredient from the recipe, your perfectly rounded patties will inevitably fall apart as they cook. The best binding agent you can use is an egg. Two eggs added into the mix will keep your patties strong. However, a flax egg is a great vegan alternative to help prevent crumbliness.
Another vital component is the breadcrumbs. These also help the burgers stay together. However, they also absorb and hold moisture within the patty. This prevents them from drying out as they cook. If you are gluten-free, we recommend using a gluten-free version of breadcrumbs. Don’t have any breadcrumbs on hand? You can finely crush up some crackers instead, or simply omit the ingredient. However, be aware that the patties will not be as hearty, and the mixture will make less burgers.
Black Bean Veggie Burger
Time: 35 minutes
Serves: 5 people
- 2 cups of cooked blackbeans (canned or dried)
- 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs (Use GF breadcrumbs if looking for a gluten-free veggie burger recipe instead)
- 2 eggs (If vegan, you can use a flax egg instead)
- ½ of an onion, finely diced and sauteed
- 1 tsp of onion powder
- 1 tsp of garlic powder
- ½ tsp of smoked paprika
- ½ tsp of cumin
- ¼ tsp of salt
- ½ tsp of cayenne powder
- Optional: ½ can of sweet corn
- Optional: 1 tbsp of nutritional yeast
- Rinse the black beans and place them into a large mixing bowl.
- Mash the beans with a fork, making sure to leave some large pieces.
- Dice up the onion into very fine pieces. Saute until translucent. Add to the bowl of black beans when cooled.
- Mix all of the spices together separately. Once evenly mixed, add to the large mixing bowl.
- Add the breadcrumbs and 2 eggs (or flax seed eggs) to the bowl
- If you are using the sweet corn, add it in now.
- Using your hands, mix all of the ingredient together until evenly combined
- Form the mixture into 5 round patties.
- Grill for around 15 minutes or until the outside has browned.

For this portion, we will only focus on the main component of these burgers. Black beans are a mega-powerful ingredient, and these burgers will give you a hearty dose of their health benefits. Black beans are great at maintaining bone and heart health because they are jam packed with numerous vitamins and minerals. They also are great for lowering blood pressure due to their low sodium content and high levels of potassium, calcium, and magnesium. In order to keep their sodium low either use dried beans or rinse your canned legumes thoroughly before use. (1)

This powdery substance will provide plant-based eaters with the necessary amounts of vitamin B-12, which cannot be sourced from the foods within a vegan diet. That is because B-12 only occurs naturally within meat, dairy products, and eggs. Our bodies cannot make this vitamin; however, it is absolutely essential for various processes throughout our body. Veggie Burger With Chickpeas Recipe

Our burger recipe is reminiscent of a falafel. How great is that? When you dress your burger up, we suggest incorporating some Mediterranean inspiration into your toppings. We’ve included a simple and quick recipe for a taziki sauce that will take this dish to the next level. In addition, we recommend adding some pickled red onions and butter lettuce. Let’s jump into this new recipe!
Chickpea Veggie Burger
Time: 40 minutes
Serves: 8 people
For the Burger:
- 2 cans of chickpeas (drained, washed, and skins removed)
- ½ red onion, finely diced
- ¼ cup of fresh parsley, finely chopped
- ¼ cup of cilantro, loosely packed
- 1 tsp of cumin
- 1 tsp of garlic powder
- ¼ tsp of cayenne powder
- 1 tsp of paprika
- 1 tsp of salt
- Cracked pepper to taste
- 4 tbsp of flour (Use gf flour if looking for gluten-free version)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
For the Burger:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F
- Combine all the ingredients into a food processor and pulse until the mixture is thoroughly combined. Be sure to not overly blend the mixture. Most chickpeas pieces should still be visible.
- Take the mixture and form into 8 burger-sized patties. We recommend making the patties about ½ inch thick to help prevent a mushy texture.
- Place them onto a lined baking sheet and into the oven
- Bake the burger patties for 15 minutes on each side, or until golden and crisp to the touch
- When finished, let the patties cool for 5 minutes.
Taziki Topping Sauce
Time: 15 minutes
Serves: 2 people
- 1 Cup of plain greek yogurt (use plant-based version instead for vegan option)
- 2 tbsp of fresh dill, chopped
- ¼ cup of english cucumber, peeled and finely chopped into small cubes
- 1 clove of garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp of lemon juice
- 1 tbsp of olive oil
- While burgers are baking in the oven, prepare the sauce
- Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix until evenly combined
Note: This can be made a day ahead to allow the flavors to really combine.

Extra Tips on How to Make the Best Veggie Burger
There are some other tips you may want to know before making your burgers this season. First, you can decide whatever cooking method you prefer! Baking in an oven is our preferred method, as it does not introduce any more oils to the burger than necessary. However, grilling or pan frying the patties are options as well.
When pan frying, you want to make sure the oil and pan are hot before adding the patty. This will allow the outside to get a delicious crust and will prevent the burger from absorbing all the oil before it has started to really cook. Using an oil with a higher smoke point, like avocado oil, will also help your burger cook better. However, oils with a lower smoke point, like olive oil, can still work.
For grilling, you may want to pre-cook your veggie burgers in the oven for a bit (around 15 minutes) before setting them on the grill. This will help them hold their shape and reduce the risk of them falling apart.
You can always customize your burgers, but you will want to pay particular attention to your ratio of wet and dry ingredients. Too many wet ingredients and the burgers will be mushy. On the flip side, too many dry ingredients and they will crumble.
For wet ingredients, feel free to add in some ketchup, barbeque sauce, or nut butters. These sauces should not compromise the texture when added in small amounts (about 2 tablespoons). However, shredded veggies such as carrots and onions, will introduce tons of water into the mixture. It is recommended to remove as much moisture as possible by squeezing them before throwing them into the mix. However, if you feel your mixture has gone a bit too wet, add in 1 teaspoon of extra breadcrumbs at a time until it is back to normal.
Adding some drying ingredients, such as the bread crumbs and flour in our recipes, will help your mixture hold together. If you would prefer to use something in place of breadcrumbs or flour, then you are more than welcome to! Whether you use breadcrumbs or flour is also entirely up to you! Feel free to experiment with a cup of cooked brown rice or ½ of a cup of cooked quinoa. Oats are also a great option as well. All-in-all, it’s your burger, so you should make it exactly how you like it!
